TRAI Finally Allows Even Corporate Mobile Customers To Avail MNP

Large Corporate Customers, who usually opt for bulk communication plans for their employees, have won a significant reprieve from the clutches of ‘Contractual Obligations’ wielded by Mobile Companies. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) has taken a landmark decision to allow bulk ‘Porting Out’ requests from corporations who had earlier entered into specific agreements with telecom service providers. Companies can now change their mobile service provider for up to 50 numbers at a time & that too by sending out a single porting request via a Letter of Authorization. Wasn’t MNP active already? Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has been active for about 2 years now & has become a powerful obligatory influencer that ensured mobile companies stayed true to their promises & offered quality service. Leveraging the unique 10 Digit mobile number, these companies could earlier hold their subscribers, but MNP allowed freedom from the companies & permitted the harried customers to walk away with their precious mobile number. Unfortunately, the same privilege wasn’t extended to corporate customers. Just like a few cases where mobile companies refused to hand-over Porting Codes for petty reasons, here too, they cited ‘Contractual Obligations’ as a reason to refuse Porting Requests. Accordingly, corporate clients had complained to TRAI that their requests to port numbers to a different carrier were being rejected by operators & fortunately for them, the apex body for Mobile Communications has listened. The fear of losing individual customers may not be that threatening enough, but losing a big company/client that ensures substantial revenues via bulk contracts, will surely be a huge motivational factor to ensure top-quality service & quick resolution to grievances.  Hopefully, these mobile companies won’t need special laws to offer quality of services now.
